The pages images are Group 4 Compression TIFF files, two pages per file and each file averages 50K-80,000 bytes. This is half the size of  the equivalent GIF file. This G4 TIFF file format is common for FAX and OCR but not for most image viewers or editors.

You need to download a (free for personal use) image viewer such as the IrView  which is a VERY fast image viewer. IrfanView32 is only for Win95 and WinNT and is available from

Can someone try the MAC shareware-  Iview and/or  Imageviewer  from

I hope that people will volunteeer to type or OCR  this book into HTML, RTF,  or text format so the text can be placed online and be searchable. I give  the  NEHGS, LDS, LOC, IIGS, Massachusetts or Rhode Island Historical Society, RIGS, and other appropriate non profit history and genealogy societies the non exclusive right to use these images and and volunteered transcriptions.
The people who scan and transcribe these images retain any  "for profit" commercial rights.
