Genealogical Reference Material with Descriptions

The following information is separated into four sections: Cemeteries (right at the top), History, Census and Public Records, and Periodicals. Each section is sorted according to its contents.

Cemetery Transcriptions, Indices and Directories

The publishing dates vary because multiple editions have been issued. HINT: The older editions could have additional information because information is sometimes lost on tombstones due to aging. Conversely, look for newer editions when trying to locate more recent graves.

Don't forget the Online Resources listed at Logan County GenWeb for transcriptions of some of these cemeteries.

Illinois became a Territory in 1809

Hint

1810 - 1865

Territorial and state censuses were taken in 1810, 1818, 1820, 1825, 1830, 1835, 1840, 1845, 1855, and 1865. The 1810, 1818, 1825,1830, 1835, and 1840 censuses have been indexed and published. Some earlier residents were also listed in the 1807 Indiana territorial census, which is indexed. This information was extracted from the Family History SourceGuideTM - Research Outline Illinois. The Family History Library TM has copies of these censuses. The 1865 Logan portion of the census in the library at Utah has been described as follows: 6 pages that I could read no names on and another 4 or 5 where I could read partial names.

Microfilm of original records in the Illinois State Library in Springfield. I noticed in spot checking the films, some counties were missing for some years. I have not checked the availability of Logan county records for each census year.

US Census day: 1 June 1880

The first census that lists birthplace of parents and the relationship of persons on the property to the head of household. Caution: the federal government created statewide indexes only for households with children who were born between 1869 and 1880 [age ten and under]. There are ways to find individuals without the index so ask for help.

Soundex is discussed only once on this list but continues in use through the most recent census. A Soundex (a Phonetic Index) lookup is required for any census after 1880. It will give you the information necessary to find your individual on the actual Census Rolls. They are too extensive to list here. They are listed in the NARA catalog. US Census day: 1 June 1900.

Along with other information this census includes: the month and year of birth; age at last birthday; if a wife is listed within the household, then the number of years married, number of children born of that marriage, and number of children living. This census also included great detail about people who immigrated to the US. I have observed in my family where spouses were deceased, people responded for the total years married and gave numbers that included their first marriages and women gave total number of children born without regard for which marriage they were born to.

US Census day: 1 January 1920

The 1920 census schedules closely resemble that of the 1910 census. The 1920 census, however, did not ask about unemployment on the day of the census, nor did it ask about service in the Union or Confederate army or navy. Questions about the number of children born and how long a couple had been married were also omitted. The 1920 census included four new questions: one asking the year of naturalization and three about mother tongue.
