Great-grandson of Major-General Benjamin Lincoln, in command of Expedition which cleared Boston Harbor of the British vessels in June, 1776. Early in 1777 he joined Washington at Morristown with a levy of Militia, and soon after was transferred to the Continental Army with rank of Major-General, and served as such during the entire war; participated in siege of Yorktown; was appointed by General Washington to receive the sword of Cornwallis upon his surrender of the British forces.
