PREFACE

-----The purpose of this book is to provide a tool for the researcher in tracing his Pickens lineage. No book can ever be all inclulsive in genealogy. I have therefore confined myself to THE PICKENS OF THE SOUTH, seeking to trace the families derived from the Pickens family that came to Bucks County, Pennsylvania and spread out through Augusta County, Virginia into the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky and all of the south.

This book comes out of 23 years of research and correspondence with the Pickens descendants. the abundance of material in my files has been carefully studied and reappraised continuously. I have tried to keep an open mind in making my conclusions, I do not offer this as the final word on any line, and do not wish to be thought dogmatic about any conclusion. With the material at hand, and with helpful opinions of many others, the arrangement here offered seems fairly accurate.

Research has been done personally in 41 counties in North and Suth Carolina, Geoergia, Alabama, mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Census records have been searched in 80 counties in those states and in Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri. Friend have shared their census research in Texas and Oklahoma.

Our primary debt of gratitude goes to the late Mr. Monroe Pickens of Greenville, S.C. who helped me find my own Pickens connection; to Mrs Kate Pickens Day who published "Cousin Monroe's Pickens Family" in 1951, and who gives permission to use some of her material; To Mrs. Nellie Pickens Anderson of Rockford Tennessee, author of the "The John Pickens Family" and her permission to use some of her material; to the late Mr. W.V. Montgomery of Selma Alabama; To Dr. Andrew L. Pickens of Charlotte, N.C.; To Mr Raymond N. Bell, Washington, Pennsylvania for his encouragement and co-operation i this work, and to many others who are listed among the correspondants.

I have purposefully confined myself to giving the first three or four generations from the early ancestors, even though in many instances we have lineges complete to the newest generation. This has been done in order to conserve space,and to outline the early generations which are always the hard ones to find. I have also given some primary sources such as pension applications, interviews, land grants, and early county records from Augusta Co. Va. Much other importnat data to prove the points made has been left out, trusting you will have faith in this effort enough to believe in our intergrity. In any effort to trace your own lineage, enought has been given to help you tie on to lines give here, and to suggest where you may do you own research.

It is my hope that this brief work will make all Pickens descendants feel more pride in the positive character, Solid Virture, and undaunted faith of our ancestors. St. Paul said in Hebrews 11;39-40, (Goodspeed translation) - "Yet though they all gained God's approval by their faith, they none of them received what he had promised, for God had resolved upon someting still better for us, that they might not reach the fulillment of their hopes except with us." - Eron M. Sharp.

.....Research by my predecessors, Mr. Monroe Pickens and Dr. A.L. Pickens, indicates that the Pickens in America have varied origins. The names appears from early times in Scotland and England in different forms, and indeed seems to have variants in other languages. Like may other family names, Pickens may have originated as a name form several wholly independent sources.
The name is found in Lowland Scotch dialect spelled "PICEN" and has become generally spelled in Europe PICKEN, the final "s" has been added only in America. When the plantations of Scotch people began to be made in North Ireland after James VI of Scotland, became James I of England (1603), some Pickens families migrated to North Ireland. The earliest settlements of them appears to have been made in County Antrim the following notes give evidence:
1. List of householders in Ballymoney, County Antrim in 1766 show JAMES PICKAN.
2. The Hearth Money Roll for County Antrim for 1669 shows: (a household tax).
ROBERT PICKIN at Lambery Liberties;
JOHN PICKIN at Ballymoney;
WIDOW PICKANE at Drumskea in Ballymoney Parish;
THOMAS PICKEN at Moneycanon in Finvoy Parish.
3. List of wills proven in Diocese of Clogher, Counties Fermanagh and Tyrone, there appears the will of JOHN PICKIN, of Cavanaleck, County Tyrone, 1679.
4. Records of General Synod of Ulster 1691- 1820: Andw. Pikan a representative elder from Donagheady Congregation, County Tyrone.
Andw. Pikan of Donagheady appointed member of a committee, June 1, 1708.
William Picking elder from Carrickfergus, June 15, 1836.
Tradition in several emigrating Pickens families to America show they came from Ballymoney Parish in County Antrim. Members of the Picken family still live there.
T H E  F R E N C H  T R A D I T I O N:

General Andrew Pickens in his letter to General Lee in 1811 made the following statement: "My father and mother came from Ireland. My father's progenitors emigrated from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nance."(Appendix No. 1). There seems to be some support for the claim that one ROBERT PICON, a scotchman or Breiton at the court of France was a Protestant who fled from Scotland in 1661 to avoid persecution of Charles II. He may have gone to France in the days when there was a close alliance between Scotland and France. In France he is said to have married Madam Jean Bonneauy, also a Protestant. They fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nance by Louis XIV in 1685, annulling all privileged granted to Protestants by his grandfather Henry IV.
Tradition continues that they went to Scotland, later to North Ireland. There they not only found blood kinsmen of the Picken family, but also more liberty for dissenters than in Scotland. Many French Huguenots found refuge in North Ireland, among their religious kinsmen, the Presbyterians.
Miss Eliza Pickens, great granddaughter of General Andrew Pickens in a paper prepared for D.A.R. said: "General Andrew Pickens first home was in Buck's Co. Penn. The Pickens were French Huguenots and left France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. General Picken's great grandfather, ROBERT PICKENS held a good position in France and with every inducement to remain. He refused to live under Roman Catholic rule.
He married an accomplished young widow, Madam Boneau."

IN BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:

In the records of the Dutch Reformed Church, Bensalem, Bucks Co. Penn. under the heading of"Entries made by Elder Christopher Van-Zandt, during the Ministry of Rev. Malachi Jones 1719 - 1722", there is a list of "Newcomers from Earlandt" who joined the church in which we find:
1719 - Willem Pecken and his wife, by certificate.
1720 - Iserell Pecken by profession.
1722 - Margaret Picken by Profession (From; Bolton's "Scotch- Irish Pioneers")
In the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania Publications under, Reformed Church, (Neshaminy) Bensalem, Bucks Co.; No. 5, 1912-1914.
p. 35 "New Church Members from Ireland, Nov. 4, 1724" "The new members from Ireland have been received on letter of attestation and have now become chosen Elders - William Pickens and his wife"
p. 36 "Israel Pickens, by profession of faith" "Margaret Pickens, communicant, June 6, 1724."
It must be remembered that the period of two years difference may account for the old custom of keeping all members on Probation for two years. And now to better understand the situation at Bensalem we quote:
from "HISTORY OF BUCKS COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA"
BY J.H. Battle. Page 473.
"Among the various elements of the early population of the township, the Dutch were the first to provide themselves with church privileged. As early as 1700 the Vandgrifts and Vansants were associated with their co-religionists of Southampton in the organization of "THE CHURCH OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST at Bensalem, Sammeny, Yermantown and outlying villages" of which the Rev. Paulus Van Vlecq was pastor. In 1711 Thomas Stevenson executed a deed of trust for a church site. The congregation which worshipped here was united in organization with the body since known as "The Church of North and South Hampton". The separation occurred in 1719 and was caused by friction between the Dutch and the Scotch-Irish who formed the membership of the former place. In December 1710 the fifteen (15) members were all Dutch names. The number had increased so to forty two (42) in 1719-1720 of whom twenty seven (27) were Scotch-Irish. The proportion of Dutch names the following year was still smaller, there being but three communing members. It may be correctly inferred that this was caused by dissatisfaction among them in regard to introduction of the English language and Presbyterian usages into the church services; and from that time they were employed almost exclusively."
On page 484 Battle says that "a settlement of Scotch Presbyterians at Abingdon had been organized into a church by Rev. Malachi Jones, and calls him a Welchman. Abingdon is just across the line from Bucks county in Montgomery County, Penn. The Abigdon church records record the marriage between LUCY PICKENS and MATTHEW GILLESPIE, on September 2, 1722" (Penn. Archives-Second Series - Vol. 9. p. 199)
Andrew Pickens of Fayette Co. Tenn. in 1833 was interviewed by Lymon C. Draper, the celebrated organizer of the Wisconsin Historical Society and Archives. He told Draper about the Pickens coming to America (See Appendix No. II, Par. 4). Who ever the parents were he stated there were at least four brothers named, ISRAEL, ANDREW, JOHN, and GABRIEL. Tradition adds ROBERT and possibly WILLIAM. We believe that LUCY PICKENS GILLESPIE was also a child of the same family.
JOHN PICKENS from Paxton Township, Lancaste Co. Penn. moved to Orange Co. VA. where he proved his importation into the colony on Thursday, July 24, 1740, stating that he brought himself, Eleanor, Margaret, Margaret ye younger, Gabriel Pickens and William Baskin. It appears that margaret the older woman may have been his mother, Margaret the younger his sister, and we know Gabriel was his brother.

{EMS 3}

WILLIAM PICKENS, traditional son of ROBERT and JEAN BONNEAU PICKENS, may have been born in France, and came with his parents to North Ireland, where he was married. MARGARET, his wife is said by some to have been Margaret Pike (traditional).
Their Children appear to have been:
1. ISRAEL PICKENS - died in Charlotte Co VA. in 1749. m. MARTHA _______ ?
2. ANDREW PICKENS - m. NANCY DAVIS, died in 1756 in Waxhaw settlement S.C.
3. JOHN PICKENS - m. ELEANOR _______ ? - lived last in Abbeville Dist. S.C.
4. LUCY PICKENS - m. MATTHEW GILLESPIE, m(2) JOHN KERR.
5. GABRIEL PICKENS - m. ZERUBIAH _______ ? Died in Abbeville Dist. S.C.
6. ROBERT {PIKE} PICKENS - m. MIRIAM (DAVIS ?) died in Pendleton Dist. S.C.
7. WILLIAM PICKENS - m.(1) ELIZABETH _______ ? m.(2) Mrs. ANN SCOTT - d. Montgomery Co. VA.
8. MARGARET PICKENS _ "ye younger". Once accounts says she married a Ramsey.
IN LANCASTER COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA:

GENERAL ANDREW PICKENS stated that he was born in Paxton Township, Lancaster County, Penn. This is the present Dauphin County. Both his father Andrew Pickens, and his Uncle John Pickens were in Lancaster County. A petition signed by "sundry inhabitants of Chester and Lancaster for a road from Jno. Harris's ferry, to Edw'd Kennisons Planation in the Great Valley" was delivered by E. Shippen and J. Harris, May 21, 1735. It was signed by 125 citizens including: John Pickens, Andrew Pickens, John Kerr, David Kerr, James Kerr and others. Records in Augusta County VA. also prove that John Pickens was from Lancaster Co. Penn.

IN AUGUSTA COUNTY VIRGINIA:

Augusta County was formed from Orange County, Virginia about 1744. The county was organized in 1745. Early records of Orange County and Augusta County show abundantly that the Pickens brothers arrived prior to 1740. Israel Pickens and Andrew and John Pickens were appointed among the first justices of the peace when Augusta County was organized in 1745. Gabriel Pickens arrived with his brother John in 1740, and was in the militia of Augusta Co. as early as 1742. William Pickens seems to have arrived a bit later possibly as a widower with children, and married Mrs. Ann Scott in 1752. Lucy Pickens who married Matthew Gillespie who died leaving her with two children, had married John Kerr in Penn. and the arrived in 1740 when John Kerr made declaration of his importation of his family. Robert Pickens, traditionally the other brother, is said to have lived in either Frederick Co. Maryland, or Frederick Co. VA. (Frederick Co. VA was formed at the same time as Augusta 1745 from Orange county and embraced then all that part of the Shenandoah Valley north of Orange county.) The abstracts of Augusta Co. Records made by Lymon Chalkley, and usually called simply "Chalkley's Annals" gives much about the Pickens and will be given about each of the brothers under his own heading.

IMPORTATION DECLARATIONS:

Under the existing laws of Virginia at the time, in order to encourage emigration, a freeholder who brought persons into the colony at his own expense, on making declaration of such was entitled to a certain number of additional acres.

ORDER BOOK II, ORANGE COUNTY COURT contains the declarations of several following:

p. 218 JOHN PICKENS, on July 24, 1740 declares he imported himself, Eleanor his wife, Margaret, Margaret ye younger, Gabriel Pickens, and William Baskin.
p. 138 JOHN CARR (KERR) on March 27, 1740 declared he imported himself, his wife Lucy, Margaret Gillespy and Matthew Gillespy children of his wife, and William, Barbara, Lucy, Martha Carr, his children.
p. 158 SAMUEL SCOTT on May 22, 1740 declares he imported, himself, Ann his wife, and Jane and John his children.

BAPTISMAL RECORDS:

Among the earliest presbyterian churches established in Augusta county (Orange county earlier) were Tinkling Spring and The Old Stone Church. The two churches were for a long time served by the same pastor. Old Stone Church is where the Pickens families worshipped. It is about 8 miles north of Staunton, VA. When Rev. John Craig was pastor of the two churches he kept record of all the baptisms of children (infants) of the two churches, indicating where he baptized them. If at either of the churches he simply said "in congregation". this record has been published, among other places, as the appendix in Wilson's History of Tinkling Springs (See: "TINKLING SPRINGS-HEADWATER OF FREEDOM", by Dr. Howard McKnight Wilson, Fisherville, VA., 1954.) pages 470 - 483.

He united with Bensalem church on confession in 1722. Married soon after ward. He moved to Orange Co. VA. where he had a mill near Staunten before 1740. Had a child baptized while there in 1740. He moved again about 1743 to Brunswick Co. VA locating at Cub Creek which is in the present Charlotte Co. VA. He was a member of Cub Creek Pres. church where he died and was buried in 1749.
MARTHA PICKENS, his wife may have been the second wife, as there is a gap of 11 years between the oldest child and the next oldest. After the death of Israel she move to Anson co. NOTE: The Montgomery Material and much data on Israel Pickens family was furnished by Mr. William Vaughn Montgomery, of Selma, Alabama, who was a son of Lawrence Harvey Montgomery and Annie John. He had done much research in the Montgomery, Pickens, and John families. Fuller details of the Montgomery family will be found in THE PICKENS FAMILY by Kate Pickens Day, Easley, S.C. 1951, pg. 194 ff. One correction should be noted: John Montgomery who married Mary Clark, was the son of JAMES MONTGOMERY and wife Ann Woods, and grandson of James and Martha Montgomery. This correction was furnished the author by Mr. W.V. Montgomery.

{This is a Historical Record prepared by W. Waughn Montgomery, P.O. Box 115, Selma, Ala. Very Good, From Original sources in the main. From the University of Alabama Library dated 9-8-92

It seems to me in tracing families the first thing to do is to learn where they lived and that particularly true as to settlers of the Waxhaws.

I find that most genealogists start looking for them in South Carolina and that defeats the purpose. The Waxhaw settlers were strictly in N.C. And they did everything possible to prevent being pushed off into S.C. They were surveyed into S.C. and 200 of them sent a petition to the assembly at Newbery (Newberry?) protesting against it and they had very good reasons for it but we will have to step back into history for that. Most of the Scotch-Irish in that section came from Penn. Through Virginia.

In 1682 Pennsylvania was granted to William Penn.

In 1683 three counties were organized - Bucks, Philadelphia and Chester. They divided the colony like three pieces of pie, converging in Philadelphia. the southernmost part was Chester. The settlers began coming in and took up all the land around the coast.

In 1720 the Scotch-Irish began to come in droves and finding all the coastal lands taken up pushed west and settled.

In 1729 The eastern part of Chester county was cut off and organized into Lancaster and that is where we find the most of Scotch-Irish.

In 1738 Virginia authorized the establishment of two new counties - Frederick and Augusta - in the Shenandoah valley, west of the Blue Ridge mountains. They wanted protection from the Indians and invited the Scotch-Irish to dome down and settle, promising each exemption of taxes for ten years - 1738-1748 - and titles to land. This induced hundreds of them to come and settle there. But the two new counties were not formally established until later - Frederick until 1742 and Augusta 1745, and this is where many genealogist make mistakes. The records of those two counties before formally established were kept in Orange county and that is where you have to go to get them.

Well, the boys and girls came down from Penn., picked out nice places, and were getting along well till the explosion occurred.

In 1748 Virginia resumed the collection of Tithes (Church Money) and the colony blew up like a bunch of firecrackers. They had had a 100 years of that stuff in Ireland and just would not stand for it in America. So, they just picked up and moved out. Some of them took the trouble to sell their land. Others were not so particular; they just walked off and left it.

It just so happened in 1749 North Carolina was ready and waiting for them. The entire part of the Western colony was organized into Anson county - and no tithes - and there was a stampede to get into North Carolina. Whole colonies came together and -note this - most of those who came in between 1750 and 1760 were from the Shenandoah valley. Afterwards they came direct from Pennsylvania.

In 1750 a group of thirty or forty families came there from Augusta count, Virginia and settled in Waxhaws. This group included most of the families we are interested in. The Pickenses, Davises, McCanes, Montgomerys, Nisbits, Craigs, etc. etc. too many to list and they ALL settled in North Carolina.

Andrew Pickens, Sr. was appointed one of the first Justice's and bought five acres on which to build the first court house. Now, all the records of the Waxhaw settlers will be found in Anson county from 1749 to 1762.

In 1762 the western part of Anson was cut off into Mecklenburg County.

In 1764, I think that was the year the line between North and South Carolina was surveyed and most of the settlers there seems found in South Carolina, where they did not want to pay tithes again, much to their disgust. However the lands of some of them remained in Mecklenburg.

In The Anson county records: Will Book No. 1, pages 270 -1 and 2, there is this record of Hugh McCain:

James McCorkle, Inventory 1760 (Tax Digest) mention is made of the following: Robert Davis, William Davis, John Crockett, James Barriatt, Hugh Montgomery, James Gambrel, John Lin, Samuel Tomson, Andrew Pickens, John Coffee, Thomas Davis, John Nutt and Hugh McCain. Most all of those families came from Augusta County, Virginia.

The Hugh Montgomery was not a member my family, although undoubtedly related. My family came directly from Pennsylvania to Mecklenburg and in 1770 settled three miles north of Charlotte around Sugar Creek church, which was quiet a long ways from the Waxhaws.

The Waxhaw Presbyterian church, 1758, March 9th. Rev. Robert Miller and Jean, his wife in consideration of friendship and affection conveyed a tract of land to Robert Davis, Robert Ramsey, John Lin (They spell Lynn now) Samuel Dunlap and Henry White to be used for the Presbyterian congregation of the Waxhaws for the building of a church thereon. Signed in the presence of Robert McClanahan, John Crockett and Andrew Pickens. Recorded in Anson county Sept. 17, 1759, Deed Record D, Page 371- 375.

Now, lets go back to Augusta county, Virginia, for a Montgomery- McCain connection which might be of interest.

KEGLEY'S VIRGINIA FRONTIER, PAGE 166.

"Perhaps there was no name in this back settlement more important than Captain James Montgomery, gentleman, who with a family of grown sons came from Lancaster county, Penn. to Virginia. His sons, Robert and John came first and contracted for a homestead in Borden's tract. Payment was two uncommon large bells. Title in land was made in Robert's name. His father, Justice of the county and active member of the community until his death in 1757 when he was killed by Indians and mother Anne returned to Pennsylvania after the death of her husband, James."
Page 176 - same record:
"Margaret Montgomery, widow of Robert Montgomery, married James McCain."
HENINGS LAW STATUES AT LARGE, VOL. 7 - 1756-1763 "Militia of Augusta county
- and for provisions - gives names of James Montgomery, Sr., James Montgomery, Jr., Samuel Montgomery, John Montgomery and Robert Montgomery,"

As to Israel Pickens there were decidedly TWO of them. The one who died in 1749 whose wife was named Martha; and the one who married Martha Nisbet some twenty years later. Israel Pickens, my ancestor, owned a mill on Mill Creek near North River in Augusta County, VA. in 1738. His daughter, Margaret, was baptized in the Old Stone Church by Rev. John Craig in Augusta County in 1740. This is the Margaret Pickens who afterwards, around 1768, married James Walkup in the Waxhaws. Sometimes between 1740-1743, Israel Pickens joined a colony of about thirty families and moved down in what is now Charlotte County, VA.

April 28th, 1743, Samuel Pickens, son of Israel and Martha Pickens, was born in what is now Charlotte County, VA. He died June 9, 1821 in Cabarrus County, N.C. I have his obituary printed Friday June 29th, 1821 in the Raleigh "Carolina Gazette". This was Captain Samuel Pickens who married Jane Corrigan and had ten children, one of whom was Israel Pickens, Governor of Alabama.

Rebecca Pickens, daughter of Israel Pickens and Martha Pickens was born in Charlotte county, VA April, 1747 and died in the Waxhaws Oct. 26, 1829. She is buried at old Tizah Cemetery. She married about 1765 James Davis and had seven children; Israel, named for his grandfather,

Robert Davis,
Martha Davis - Craig
Sarah Davis - Nisbet
Margaret Davis,
Jannett Davis - Baker
Rebecca Davis - Baker
Hannah Pickens a daughter of the first Israel Pickens was born in Charlotte County, VA. in 1749 and died in Mecklenburg County, N.C. 1809 and is buried at Sugar Creek graveyard under the name of Davis, her second husband. She first married James Clark by whom she had six children. He died 1781. She then married George Davis by whom she had two children. (This James Clark ancestor of the writer).

When I say those children were born in Charlotte County, VA. this is not entirely correct for it was first Brunswick county. In 1745 it was changed to Lunenburg and afterwards several were made. The records are in Crunswick county. There we find the names of 16 settlers who had taken land previously. the list includes:
Israel Pickens, 643 acres.
James Walkup, 403 acres 17;47.
In 1748 Virginia resumed the collection of Tithes and in the book "SUNLIGHT ?" by Loudon C. Bell we find the following:
page 79 James Walkup 1 Tithe.
page 88 James Walkup 1 Tithe.
page 93 Israel Pickens 1 Tithe.
page 94 William Pickens 1 Tithe.
Tithes were paid on servants and slaves. - - The first Israel Pickens was buried at Cub Creek Graveyard and he was a charter member of the church and owned a plot in the cemetery.
The last year in which James Walkup and Israel Pickens, paid Tithes was in 1749 and they all picked up and left by 1750, the entire colony and moved to N.C.
(Omit some more.)
Now lets consider the other Israel Pickens who married Martha Nisbet. Here is an outstanding thing I have never be able to understand. All of the genealogist seem so determined to trace all descendants back to poor old General Andrew that they exceed the quota allowed by the O.P.A.
Andrew Pickens, Sr. had four children when he died. Now he has several more. I do not know how many children Andrew Jr. had when he died but look at them now. Why they overlook John Pickens and his sons I do not know when they were all over the place.
John Pickens, came to Augusta County, VA in 1738, was one of the largest land operators in the section and when the county was organized in 1745, he and his brother Andrew were named Justices and helped organize the county and the court. Chalkely's Abstracts of Augusta county are full of mentions of him. In fact, he was probably more important there than his brother Andrew. The records even show in 1754 he had moved to Carolina and there are many of the records of him in the Waxhaws; and several Andrew showed and John was there with him. So why nobody paid any attention to him I do not know.
John Pickens' wife was named Eleanor; and we know by the records he had a son -

William baptized 1741;
Israel baptized 1744;
Robert baptized 1749;

Now, that Israel baptized in 1744 I think was the one who married Martha Nisbit at Waxhaw. And I think that the Robert baptized in 1749 was a son of John pickens and the one who wrote to you in 1943 was from him. There was no other Robert Pickens anywhere around at that time. Now, before I wear out my welcome completely here is another bit about Israel and Martha Pickens I picked up in North Carolina when I was there in 1928.
"Monroe, N.C. Aug. 1928: Mrs. Sarah Walkup Simpson of Monroe, N.C., in good health and excellent memory, although 92 years of age, certifies as follows: That she is a descendant of Israel Pickens through two of his daughters; on the mother's side of the house she is the daughter of Dorcas Montgomery and Robert Walkup; granddaughter of John Montgomery and Mary Clark; great granddaguather of James Clark and Hannah Pickens; great-great granddaughter of Israel Pickens and his wife Martha. On the father's side of the house she is the daughter of Robert Walkup and Dorcas Montgomery; granddaughter of James Walkup and Margaret Pickens; great granddaughter of Israel and Martha Pickens. Mrs. Simpson further states that Israel and Martha Pickens had five children:

William Pickens married Elizabeth Black:
Samuel Pickens married Jane Corrigan;
Margaret Pickens married James Walkup;
Rebecca Pickens married James Davis;
Hannah Pickens married James Clark;
Signed by her and witnessed by Daisy Belk.
(Omit some more of letter)
I will take up with you the Smith Nelson matter another time and I know you are not interested much in the Pickens name. I an not related to the Davises. May be you can tell me something about Daniel Nelson. My great, great, grandmother was named Isabella Nelson and she was the wife of Joseph Reed. I do not know the name of her father. I have been six hours writing this letter and am beginning to get wozzy eyed, so guess I had better stop. Will talk about records another time and also look up those McCains who live here.

DIED:"At his seat in Cabarrus County, on the 8th, instant, CAPT. SAMUEL PICKENS, in the 78th year of his age. Mr.Pickens was born in Charlotte County, in the State of Virginia, in the year 1743 from whence he emigrated to North Carolina at an early age of his life, and settled himself in Mecklenburg County (now Cabarrus) where he continued to live until his death. He was one of those remaining few, who proved ever faithful in the gloomy days of the American Revolution, in the godlike cause of freedom. Throughout life he cherished the principles of genuine Republicanism; and it may be safely said, that there is no man living whose bosom throbs with purer patriotic principles than did is. in his domestic concerns he was a kind parent, and a valuable neighbor. He left five sons, and two daughter, and a numerous train of friends and acquaintances to bemoan his loss.
