of Ashtabula County, O., San Francisco, Cal., and Clarion County, Pa.In 1869, Mr. Sackett made a trip to California and remained on the Pacific coast for about 7 years, when he returned to his old home at Windsor, Ohio; but after a short sojourn there engaged in oil producing, mainly in Clarion County, Penn., a business in which he was yet engaged in 1903. It is said that he is a part owner in fee or leasehold of many extensive tracts near Oil City, in which vicinity he has located and drilled no less than 27 wells in succession without striking a single "dry hole."

Davis, Thomas, representative, was born in Dublin, Ireland, Dec. 18,1806. He was brought to America in 1817 by his parents who settled inRhode Island, where he was educated. He learned the trade of jeweller andextended the business to that of a manufacturer of jewelry, organizingthe firm of Sackett, Davis & Co., Providence. He represented NorthProvidence in the General assembly, 1845-53, was a representative in the33d congress, 1853-55, and a state senator, 1877-78. He was anunsuccessful candidate for the 34th, 36th, 42d, 43d and 46th congresses.In 1878 his firm became financially embarrassed and in 1883 went intoliquidation. The laws of Rhode Island deprived him of the right ofcitizenship, as he held no property, and as an alien he lost his right tovote. This condition attracted wide attention, presenting, as it did, anex-representative of the U.S. congress deprived of his right of franchiseby reason of loss of wealth. Mr. Davis paid all his debts and thereafterdevoted himself to obtaining a repeal of the unjust law. He was returnedto the General assembly of Rhode Island, and served in that body,1887-90, and for a number of years on the Providence school committee.
