However, the records seem to indicate that the Aaron Sacket who died in 1758 was the brother of Jonathan Sacket, Jr. rather than his son. The CT. vital records have: Connecticut Vital Records: Kent; Births - Marriages - Deaths; 1739-1852; Barbour Collection; Connecticut State Library; 1726; Page 73: "Aaron, s. Jonathan, d. Nov. 11, 1758; Vol. 1; page 63." By Weygant's account, Aaron was born in 1758 and died in the same year. However, the vital records also have: "Abigail, d. [Jonathan, Jr. & Hannah] b. Feb. 3, 1758; Vol. 1; page 185." But the records do not show a birth for Aaron in 1758. Only his death. This would seem to be unusual if Aaron was a twin to Abigail and lived 10 months before he died. I would be possible for him to have been a second birth for Ann (Filer) Sackett in the same year but we are faced with the fact that there is no record of his birth, just his death. It also appears that the birth records for the family of 202-Jonathan jr. were recorded on page 185 of Vol. 1 of the town records. The record of the death of an "Aaron Sacket, s. of Jonathan, d. Nov. 11, 1758" is recorded on page 63 of Vol. 1 of the Warren Ct. records. In the family of 47-Jonathan Sackett, father of 202-Jonathan, Jr., there is a son, "205. Aaron Sacket, b. Aug. 5, 1735, probably died in childhood." - [Weygant, p. 52] This is probably the Aaron Sackett who died Nov. 11, 1758.

Capt. Sacket was born in East Greenwich (now Hebron), Conn., but in 1750 removed to and became a permanent resident of Kent. He there took an active part in religious, political and military affairs and gained and held the confidence and respect of his townsmen. His name appears in the list of founders of the first church established in Kent, and in 1753 he was appointed by the General Assembly of Connecticut to collect a tax levied against the property of East Greenwich for support of a minister of the Gospel.

He was a Justice of the Peace from 1771 to 1777, and again from 1779 to 1782. In the year last named he represented his town in Connecticut Legislature. In 1765 he was commissioned Captain of the Second Train Band of the town of Kent, and during the War of the Revolution he participated in several short campaigns. [Weygant, page 108-109]

Olmstead's Company, of Col. Enos' Regiment, from June to September in 1778, serving at Fort Montgomery and West Point, and was also a sergeant in Capt. Mix's Company attached to regiment commanded by Col. Increase Moseley. [Weygant, pages 160-161] Weygant spelled his name as "Sacket." However, in a letter signed by him, dated August 11, 1814, he signed his name as "Alexander Sackett." [Sackett Letter #14]

John was raised on the family farm and helped sustain it as he grew older. He married Elizabeth Sackett on Thursday, March 6, 1755; the Reverend John Ballantine (d. February 12, 1776, age 60) administering the vows. His brothers, William, Gideon, and David were also married by the rev. BallantineApril 22, 1773: Deacon John (his father) married his daughter, Lucretia, to David Sackett.

The townspeople of Westfield allied themselves with the patriots to the east and were led in part by Captain William Shepard, one of their Selectmen. In February of 1774, while the Continental Congress presided, the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts was held. Colonel John Mosely and Mr. Elisha Parks were two of the ninety representatives (John Hancock was the chairman). John's previous experience during the French and Indian War, led to the request of he and his brother William to assist in the training of the Westfield men. Word spread quickly about the attack at Lexington and the citizens prepared themselves. Two companies of militia were formed in November of that year. One company consisted of 52 men, including the commanding officer, First Lieutenant John Shepard; Sgt Gideon Shepard; David Shepard, who was at Bunker Hill.

John Shepard 3rd: (also given John, Jr.), Westfield, Lieutenant, Captain. Warham Parks Co.; general return of Col Timothy Danielson's Regt. in camp at Roxbury, May 27, 1775; ordered in Provincial Congress May 27, 1775, that officers of said regiment be commissioned. Muster roll dated Aug 1, 1775; engaged April 28, 1775; service 3 mo. 10 days. Return of men raised to serve in the Continental Army from Capt John Kellogg's (Westfield) Co.; residence, Westfield; engaged for town of Westfield; term 9 months [name crossed out]; also, list of men raised in Hampshire Co. for the term of 9 months from the time of their arrival at Fishkill agreeable to resolve of April 20, 1778; returned as received of Jonathan Warna, Commissionaries, July 20, 1778; arrived at Fishkill June 16, 1778 (this last reference is probably his son, John who was a Private). [14: 115, 122, 124.] Although not verified at this time, it is believed that his company was engaged during the Battle of Bunker Hill.

John Shephard, Westfield. Lieutenant in command of a Westfield co. of Minutemen, which marched April 20, 1775, in response to the alarm April 19, 1775; service 1 week 1 day; reported enlisted into the Army April 28, 1775.

The family moved to Hebron, NY, soon after the Revolution (1783); all of the children were born at Westfield and baptized at the First Congregational Church. John "Shepherd" is listed at Hebron in the 1790 census, his family consisting of four males over 16, one male under 16, and three females. His sons John, Jr., Silas, and Walter are separately listed. In 1800, he was listed at Hebron, he and wife over 45, with one female aged 16-26, and two boys and a girl under 10, presumably grandchildren.

The following is from the first Hebron Town Meeting "3d day of May 1784, for the District of Black Creek. First made choice of . . ." Capt John Shepard, Esq., town assessor (one of three) and also one of three overseers of the poor [History of Washington County, pg. 389]

"Voted to build three pounds in town. Licensed inns, two pounds each. John Shepard and John Shepard, Jr. [ibid, pg 390]

John Shepard of Hebron conveyed land there on December 25, 1790 to Edward and Bohan Shepard - Lots 1 & 2 of what was known as "Blundell Patent." (sold to Christopher Blundell July 27, 1765: 2000 acres in Hebron and Rupert, VT) "This indenture" was for 300 pounds [Washington County Index of Deeds, page 683].

A petition that declared John Shepard an "Insolvent Debtor" was issued in August and December of 1797 and Peter Button (his grandson) was assigned to disburse his estate on February 17, 1798. Three of his sons (John, Jr., Edward, and Silas) are listed among his creditors. I assume that they took this action to prevent their father from debtor's prison as was the procedures during those times. [I have copies of the original 10-page document WLS]

The East Presbyterian Church of Hebron (1 1/2 miles north of the present house of worship) was organized February 24, 1804. Among the male members at the time of organizing, John Shepherd (could be Jr.) [History of Washington County, pg 395] The Sessions Book of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of West Hebron listed a John Shepard "removed" in 1804 [LDS microfilm]

Notes on his death: TFSONE states that John and Elizabeth Shepard probably died in Hebron, Washington Co., NY (date not found). DAR Application of Barbara Brainerd Crane (National # 394983), dated 2/6/78, states that he died at Hebron, NY, in 1817. The DAR Application of Edna Vay Kinzinger (National #358991), dated 5/18/46, states that John died May 1, 1799, at Westfield, MA, however, this has been crossed out and replaced with 1817. If the 1800 Census is actually John and Elizabeth, then 1799 is in error and the year 1817 is most likely correct.

	664	M	i	John Shepard 1 was born on 9 Sep 1755 in Westfield, MA.  John was baptized on April 13, 1760. His date of marriage listed is the intention date. He served as a Private in Capt. David Mosely's Co., Col. John Mosely's Regt., from 21 Sept to 24 Oct 1777; service 1 mo 3 days; on expedition to Saratoga, including travel (120 miles) home. He was engaged by the town of Westfield for nine months, aged 23 years, height six feet, brown hair, light complexion, and served in Capt. Sackett's Co., Col. Mosely's Regt., arriving at Fishkill 16 June 1778 [Mass Soldiers... 14:116, 129]. He may be the John Shepard whose name appears (with that of Silas Shepard, his brother) in the Charlotte County Militia [Land Bounty Rights], with Revolutionary Service. [James A. Roberts, "New York in the Revolution" (1898), p 239] John Shepherd listed under the Soldiers of Hebron, East Hebron Company, 1814 [History of Washington County, pg 399]. "tax list for the district of Black Creek in the county of Charlotte" (before 1786) listed John Shepherd, Jr., as owing: 25 pounds 10 shillings for real estate, 26 pounds for personal estate, 8 shillings 7 "d" (pence?) for tax assessment, and 1 pound 1 shilling 5 7/9 "d" for wheat. [Washington County History, pg 389]. "A list of the people's names that have taken out license this year, and the several sums due to the overseers of the poor for the town of Hebron:" John and Edward Shepard - 2 pounds [Ibid, pg 390] He was listed in the 1790 Census in Hebron, NY, with one male under 16 years and three females. He was listed there in 1800, aged over 45, with a woman 26 to 45, a male and a female 16 to 26, a female 10 to 16, and a male under 16. The 1810 Census of is the last to mention a John "Shepherd" of Hebron with one male 16 to 26 and females: one 10 to 16, one 16 to 26, and one 45 and older; also one "all other free persons except Indians not taxed." In the pension file of Silas Shepard: John Shepard "late of Georgia," VT, now of Highgate, VT,testified that Silas, "late of Georgia, now of Fairfield," had served. The 1820 Census has John Shepard living in Franklin Co., VT, town of Highgate with one male 10-16 and one 45 and over; one female under 10 and one 26-45. Also listed in Highgate is a Rowland Shepard with one male 26-45; two females 10-16 and one 26-45. A John Shepard is found in Georgia, VT, with one male 10-16 and one 26-45; one female 26-45. I believe these to be the sons of John Shepard, Jr. John Shepherd, Jr., is listed as conveying land in Sheriff's Patent to Steven Robinson and Rowland Shepherd on August 26, 1808 . Also, Yeoman _____ in Sheriff's Patent on February 13, 1806. John and Edward Shepherd were listed as Grantors of land to James Hopkins on June 23, 1795. John Shepherd, Jr., was listed as a Grantor on May 6, 1796 and October 16, 1799. [Washington County Index of Deeds] I believe this Rowland Shepard to be a son of John, Jr. A gravestone is located in the Porter Methodist Cemetery that lists the death of a Rowland Shepard as 11 March 1838.

	672	M	ix	Edward Shepard 1 was born on 22 Nov 1767 in Westfield, MA.  He was made Ensign in 1797 in William McCracken's Co. of Light Infantry, Washington Co., NY; Lt , 5 Jan 1802, of Capt John Tomb's Co., Lt Col David Thomas's Regt; Capt in David Gray's Regt; Washington CO. Brigade, in 1804, and resigned in 1806 [NY Council of Appointment, 1: 384, 572, 731, 761.] He was listed at Hebron, NY, in the 1800 Census, his household consisting of two males aged 26 and 45, one female 16 to 26, and one male and two females 10 to 16. He is said by a descendant of his brother, Bohan, to have settled in Essex County, NY. However, the 1810 Census has an Edward Shepard living in Canton, NY, with one male 10-16, two 16-26, and one over 45; females are one 10-16 and one 26-45. The 1820 Census has this Edward with one male 26-45 and one over 45; one female 16-26 and one over 45 - both males engaged in agriculture. 1830: one male 60-70; one female under 5, one 5-10, one 15-20, and one 30-40. There is a younger Edward Shepard family in the 1840 Census living in Norfolk, NY: one male under 5, one 15-26, one 20-30; females are two 5-10, one 10-15, two 20-30, and one 60-70.
