At the outbreak of the war of the Revolution he enlisted in the 5th Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Col. Watterbury, and attached to Gen. Wooster's Brigade. He was by occupation a farmer, and settled first at Warren, Conn. In February, 1788, he sold his farm at Warren and removed to Tredford, VT., where he had purchased a farm, and located some four miles west of the Connecticut River. this farm he in 1801 sold to Judge Buckingham and removed to another a few miles distant on the banks of the Connecticut. In 1805 he disposed of this farm also and migrated with his large family to Aurelius, Cayuga County, NY., where he subsequently purchased another farm and built upon it a house, in which he lived until 1832. His son Garry V., and other members of his family became meantime interested in the settlement and building up of a new village, now called Seneca Falls, ten miles to the westward of the Sacket homestead at Aurelius. In 1832 William Sacket removed to the new village, where he had purchased a comfortable cottage, in which he spent his remaining years.

=========================================

Thetford, VT. was chartered in 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire, one of 131 towns chartered between 1760 and 1764 in what are now the states of Vermont and New Hampshire. Governor Wentworth named the town in honor of Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, 4th Earl of Arlington, 4th Viscount Thetford, a distant cousin of the king who was soon to become Prime Minister. The Thetford Grant was made to sixty-two proprietors, fifty-one of whom were from Hebron, Connecticut, led by John Phelps. The first permanent settler was John Chamberlin, an agent of one of the proprietors, who settled on a site on the Connecticut River in 1764 in what is now East Thetford. - excerpted from Charles Latham, Jr's A Short History of Thetford, Vermont 1761-1870

I believe that the Alexander for whom William substituted was probably his cousin 663-Alexander, the son of Reuben Sackett of Warren, CT. This file also shows that William moved from VT to NY in 1805. Therefore, the reference to William in the letter by Eleazer Finney in 1811 to Dr. Samuel Sackett; did mean that William had moved to NY. The file also shows that the first wife of William was Eunice BEEMAN. - Thurmon King

Sending this on as it about Trypena Sackett and her husband.
I looked up these records last March in the Thetford town clerks office for another fellow--have no problem sending same on to you as I see you are researching Jonathan and Tryphena

1) Jonathan A. Nichols was the tax collector for Thetford in the 1790s and into the early 1800s.
2) At one time he was first contstable of Thetford
3) He is not on the lists of Sheriffs of Orange Co.
4) Because he was the tax collector and constable he is noted on MANY land records- in Vols 5, 6,7,8 and 9 in the Thetford deed books. In fact so many it would take several days to sort out which were his own and which were in his official capacity.
5) The last entry was when he signed the deed for the Child, first constable 9 Oct 1813
6) Phene Nichols was a witness on many of these records
7) There is a Francis Nichols in the records both as a witness and as a grantor and grantee of lands--and both Jonathan and Francis are recorded in the same record at times.
8) There was a William Sackett who was a witness on same deed which Jonathan Nichols witnessed and they also appear on other deeds together
9) A John Sacket also shows at least once in the land records
10) Jonathan Nichols & Phene Sackett were joined in the Marriage Covenant
December 28th AD1791

Phene married Jonathan Nichols . Jr.-651sp son of Jonathan Nichols and Mary McElwain on 28 Dec 1791 in Thetford, Orange Co., VT.. Jonathan was born on 25 Jul 1754 in Bolton, MA.. He died on 26 Apr 1842 in Westfield, Chautauqua Co., NY..

There is no question that the Francis Nichols who died in Blue Ash, OH was identical to the Francis Nichols who lived first in Swanzey, NH (1787), then in Putney, VT (1790), and in Thetford, VT. In Orange Co., VT deeds, there are two land transfers (29 May 1798 and 18 April 1799) that contain both the names of Francis Nichols and JONATHAN NICHOLS. One is a deed of land from Jonathan to Francis, and there appears to be no doubt that these two were brothers. There's also no doubt that Jonathan Nichols was Jonathan Nichols Jr., b. Bolton, 25 July 1754. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, was wounded at the Battle of Bennington, moved to Thetford, and was surveyor and then sheriff of Orange County, VT. Jonathan and his family moved to Westfield, Chautauqua Co., NY about 1814 and he died in Westfield, 26 April 1842, in his 88th year of age. - [Robert Hanscom on Genforum.com; Nichols Family Forum]

Stark, and was wounded at the battle of Bennington, just before Burgoyne's surrender, and drew his pension till his death. In the fall of 1813, he removed with his family to Westfield NY the journey requireing six weeks and a three-horse team. His children were Lorrel Olney, Orvis, Achsah, Wiseman C., Chloe, Jonathan Sackett, and Lucinda, of whom only Lorrel and Wiseman C. are living. Sources in the LDS IGI have Rachel as born in SC and her mariage to Almeron being in SC as well. However, researchers of this line have determined that the Rachel White of SC is an entirely differen person. Most of these researchrs believe that she was born in CT, or possibly VT. - [Katherine Russell]
